1000FACESONPAPER.COM LAUNCHES AT THE BLACK BOX

Artist/ Actress Olga du Toit, based in Cape town, is launching an innovative new art
project at The Black Box/Worldart on Thursday, 13 December from 6.30pm to 9pm.
Entitled 1000facesonpaper.com, this is the artist’s first solo exhibition after being
selected as a SASOL new signatures finalist in 2011 for her work called ‘Daily Fix’.

Inspired by graphic novels, comics and the works of French artist and printmaker
Henri Matisse, Du Toit created and developed her own unique style of sketching a
face. The project,1000facesonpaper.com illustrates different forms of human facial
expressions, gestures and angles set in a series of 1000 prints. The first edition of
twenty-five faces will be on exhibition.

“The challenge I set myself was to render each face by using the simplest of lines to
convey expression and personality”, Du Toit explains.

Du Toit’s objective is to have each face speak directly to the mind of the viewer by
means of creating just a few expressive lines of ink. She is excited by the scope,
possibilities and uniqueness of this project to the idea that it can be interpreted and
shared to a global audience online.

“In the words of Matisse, ‘I am training my drawing hand to serve me; every ink
drawing I do, is a face waiting to be born on paper” , She says.

Each ink drawing is printed into an edition using the intaglio printing process. The
prints consist of an edition of 10 prints per face to a final total of 1000 prints. The
print sizes are approximately 35x35 cm from a 20 x 20 cm size plate that is hand
printed onto 250gsm Zerkall Butten Paper. Everything from the tearing of the paper
to the printing is done by hand resulting in slight variations that render each print
unique.

Du Toit sees herself as a creative entrepreneur or creative adventurer. She likes to
explore art in all its forms and merging conceptual ideas, music, design and
photography. 1000facesonpaper.com is one of a kind art project and may just be
the largest online series of ink drawings in the world.

The prints are available to purchase online at 1000facesonpaper.com.
On The Black box/Worldart

Worldart has acquired a new gallery space immediately next door to their
current gallery in Church Street, at number 52. The Black box opened last
week and will focus on identifying new talent with strong potential. For more

Day 2 : Dancing with the Daisies

Day 2’s  hangover was like being stuffed in a hot bag of something….so uncomfortable, eyes felt like sandpaper against satin due to the eyelids being partially closed whilst sleeping . It sounds stupid but for some this is a commonly known Phenomenon, nocturnal lagophthalmos. When the eyelids do not fully close and are exposed to the open atmosphere. Because eyelids function to lubricate the surface of the eyes, they begin to dry out significantly when open or partially open. OUCH right!  ok, it wasn't as bad as it is dramatized  but hangovers are dramatic.

There was an option of either a cold shower or  hot Shower ( for girls only) in the Daisy Den ( Women’s Eden). The catch was that you had to queue up for days! if you wanted to take a shower( be clean at a rock festival), you had stand in line. Well you basically queue up for everything. That’s just how it works with thousands of people all rockin it hard, drinking and camping at the same time and place.

We had a comprehensive five star camping breakfast with eggs, bacon, avo, baked beans and beer. Funs timesJ. After breakfast I shaved my legs RTD style ( don’t ask me how I did it or why my legs weren’t shaved before the festival).

The weather wasn't as great as last year for RTD. It was boiling hot last year and I remember chilling the whole day at the main stage area in the shade close to the beer tent. That’s how I got to see more performances. This year there was a bit more chilled- by that I mean, we almost missed most of the main acts due to alcohol overload at our campsite ( not that we made a massive attempt to finish it either)
Mission: Dance with the daisies
Don’t Miss: Desmond and the Tutus

At noon, we left our campsite to check out the scene. Our first stop was the Hemp stage at the Pick and Pay village. There was a swap shop where you could only exchange goods for goods with fake money, e.g  swap your shoes for fake money( that determines the value of your swapped shoes) use fake money to buy goods on display. I think it was a cool and fun concept.

We also got ourselves involved in some tree hugging activities ( got the tattoos for it). We signed up to plant trees for Greenpop where you can volunteer to plant trees in Cape Town or even Zambia. Greenpop plants trees and invites everyone to Participate in this “treevolution”. It’s not just only educational but fun too. And did I mention that they plant trees in Zambia :-D. So anyway, they had a photo booth with speech bubbles and an incomplete line… ours read “before I die, I want to…..DANCE WITH  THE DAISIES IN ZAMBIA.”

We left the Hemp Stage for the Main Stage, passing through what I called Camps Bay. Camps Bay or as it is originally known as the Mainstay Beach Bar was situated next to the dam. Camps Bay  seemed to always have some head banging and fist pumping parties. We caught “Dirty Bounce Collab” and “The Rudimentals” at the Main Stage before setting off to the savannah tent.  I spotted Siv Ngesi wondering off towards the food court walking with a mission.

We got back to our campsite later in the evening to try and reduce our booze load. We still had so much beer, wine and tequila. We invited guests over for a pre- drink session before heading off to the main stage to catch “Desmond and the Tutus” at 7:30pm.

It was a short night for us but we had an amazing time!

Day 3: Crime Scene

The Hangover wasn’t as hectic on the last day of RTD but the weather was just as depressing as leaving the festival. It was cloudy with rain showers. Our mission was to pack our things and relax at the main stage till the traffic cleared out. Everyone seemed to arrive and leave at the same time.
At 9am cars were already queuing up to leave.

Campsites looked like something from The Wizard of Oz 's hurricane with the clouds creating a dramatic effect in the background. People left their shoes, underwear, tents, chairs…..you name it.

We went to the Main Stage for the final act with “Beach Party”. At noon everyone moved over to Camps Bay. We went to the food court where I queued up half an hour for the most amazing crepe. That would have been the last queue for us at RTD because we flew out of Darling with no traffic to slow us down.
Till we meet again RTD.
XOXOXO.

Rocking the daisies DAY 1- Flight of the KONGOS

Doing it 49m RTD style!

After finding out that the Kongos were part of RTD’s amazing line- up, we couldn’t wait any longer to get the tickets. We got our tickets a month prior to the event that was taking place from 4 October- 7 October 2012. Pure excitement and preparations followed after.

We arrived at the Darling Wine Estate on Friday 5 October in the afternoon and we had just missed the traffic. Parking was being extended by a tractor grass cutter which meant that if you parked your car and forgot to count  which row you parked in, then let’s just say you would need to organise a team, a DRINK and a torch( night-time) to find your car. X_X Can’t Watch bbm face.

FYI this information is useful for the next RTD festival that’s a definite MUST GO! DATE MARKED ON THE CALENDAR ALREADY!

We proceeded to look for space in the general camping area that was already packed with millions (exaggerated count)of RTD campers that arrived between Thursday and Friday afternoon. The energy and great daisy vibes were so intense I almost wet my pants from excitement-  Like Super big WOW eyes , huge smile and of course a can of carling in the one hand.

Our Mission: start drinking Immediately

Our Vision: Drink and follow the crowd

Objectives: Try and stay tipsy( not drunk and not sober) before Kongo’s performance at 11pm, Friday Night

We got our tents up quick and trekked to the main sites to check out the scene. I just mention that socializing especially with friends requires strategic planning and effective communication. What happened after we set up camp was hours spent trying to get everyone together in one place. My sister and her boyfriend were only arriving later in the day after sunset. My phone was dying and we forgot to pack all our chargers including the one for the car.  But with a huge crowd like this and every second person possessing a blackberry, there was bound to be a charger floating around somewhere- Oh and in case you are wondering, there is a Daisy  Den in the general camping area with power plug points. At this point I just needed my phone to survive the next few hours till we got my sister and our other friends together to organize meeting points and familiarize ourselves with everyone’s camping area.

We walked to the main sites and watched “the Brothers move on” on the Main stage at 5pm. One of my friends Siya is the voice of the group/band. It was like watching performance art. Amazing costumes, moves and interesting sounds. Well that was MOST DEF a good start to a crazy weekend.

We walked to the entrance of the general camping area to wait for my sister and her boyfriend who were in a queue outside to get in. We eagerly waited for them inside like one does at the airport holding a greeting/ identification card. We had a few drinks at our campsite with a few swigs of TEQUILA ( maybe more than a few) but we still stuck to our objective for the evening.

As time went by, it was getting harder and harder to stay Tipsy. We walked back to the main stage in time for “Isochronous”. For those of you 5fm listeners, their song, ‘No Fire’,  is currently no 2 on the 5Fm Top 40.  Yes that is Isochronous and they were AmaZing. J

We played some pool (well they played and I watched) and enjoyed the refreshing taste of Carling Black Label. Then Finally Kongos performed and it was Mission Accomplished. This was also the primary stage of voiceless society . I sang so loud, jumping up and down so much that I almost knocked myself out. And when they played a track by their father, John Kongos, I almost cried.

And that how we rocked it the first night - at least from what i can remember :-)

Kelly!!

Kongos! love 'em!

BENEDIKT SEBASTIAN
Hottie of the day!

Well-known model and actor Benedikt Sebastian has released his debut CD after months of recording sessions in Cape Town under the guiding hand of legendary music producer Gabi le Roux.

Gabi le Roux - a name we heard before

The Album ,Jy Weet Ek Weet contains 12 songs and two remixes. Innocence and elegance are flawlessly combined with a good balance of deep themes, but not so philosophical as to alienate people.

Every song tells a story, in its own way. The music is not genre-specific; on the contrary, the idea was to not be easily pigeonholed.

Benedikt (30) is a patriot at heart. You don’t have to be Afrikaans to value the language-related issues addressed on the album, with songs such as “Los Uit My Taal!” proving that protest doesn’t necessarily exclude pleasure.

Benedikt has a visual communications background. He is constantly toying with different aspects of creativity, from writing poetry to short stories, graphic design and drawing – with awards to show for his endeavours! With famous poet Engemi Ferreira as his mother, the literary blood flows thick in his veins.
And now he is a singer. He took to the stage for the first time in 2007 and since then has been honing his talent – and songs – to the point where he is now ready to put it out there.

As for what he hopes to achieve with his music, Benedikt says: “In various stages of my life music has had a big effect on me. Sometimes carrying me through an intense depro phase, for example after a break-up, or just to get me geared up for something – but at different levels it has helped me to get to know myself better, and to grow. If I can have a positive effect on someone’s life, that will make me happy!”

The personal nature of the songs on Jy Weet Ek Weet stems from his having co-written them; there are parts of him in there and you can hear the truth. A range of influences are also evident in the diverse themes of songs such as “En Ons Dans”, “Donker Engel” and “Vlieg”. And each and every song has an approach you won’t recently have heard around every corner.

Gabi le Roux, with whom the singer followed a very collaborative approach, is extremely excited about the project: “Afrikanership is warm and sexy, but our music is often still stuck in the rut of the old-fashioned „sokkie‟ approach … We bring modern dance beats to the table, with sharp lyrics that will linger in your mind.  We’re Afrikaans international!”

Gabi was responsible for the biggest crossover hit ever in South African music with “Nkalakatha”, Mandoza’s signature song. Add to that many an award and a prolific body of work with most of the major names in the local industry, and you have a producer who knows how to coax the very best out of an important new singer.

Benedikt says: “Each song consists of a combination of different factors and I would not have been able to release any one of them if it didn’t contain a very definite part of me.” Listeners will quickly realise they are not simply hearing a few songs; there’s a real person in there.

Vagabond. Intellectual. Modern. Bloody sexy and attractive. Energetic. Passionate. Benedikt Sebastian is all that, as well as a singer with a unique sound and approach. Here at last we again have a songwriter-singer who likes to think and for that reason has something to say. This much originality deserved to be heard, and for a long time to come.

Now have a listen yourself! The Album is in stores this Month!

These are the Slovaz Chronicles

Slovaz! Who is Slovaz? New album! where and when!!!!!!

Bloggers note:
Well let me tell you this now, I used to watch Yizo Yizo back in the days, a series on SABC 1. Set in a township, It was rough and terrifying encompassing themes of  rape, murder, prostitution, abuse and  HIV/AIDS but never the less popular amongst South Africa’s youth – well my generation anyway hehehe….
Today I have had the pleasure of meeting one of Yizo Yizo’s characters, Slovaz ( the gangster in the gritty drama series with a tattoo on his six-pack)- well except this time he is not a gangster but a humble family man and  qualified engineer.

Check out Slovaz's Music Video, "Ubuntu" below. Love it!

The Slovaz Chronicles

Slovaz, aka Khaya ‘Kicky’ Khumalo is a well known actor, singer and songwriter. He is launching his latest CD album, “The Slovaz Chronicals :Ubuntu Bami" produced by the legendary Gabi le Roux. He also collaborated with well - known songstress Lindiwe Suttle on this album.

Ok guys take 5 now and think back to Mandoza’s super award winning hit Nkalakatha!  Yes that golden track! Well that’s Gabi le Roux from Kaleidosound.
Slovaz was actually born Steven Kicky Khayelihle Khumalo in the infamous township of KwaMashu in Durban. The name Slovaz emanated from the character in the television series “Yizo Yizo 3”, namely Ria's thugged-out goon with a tattoo on his six-pack
Whilst he has kept part of his past identity, notably still showing the tattoo of his name carved across his midriff, Slovaz is passionate about his faith, being a born-again Christian that worships at Rhema Bible Church in Randburg, Johannesburg.
Slovaz’s return to music marks the end of a sabbatical that also included recuperation from an accidental gunshot that narrowly and miraculously missed his heart.

Slovaz says, he feels like his life has a meaning now that his dreams are being realized. He says that it’s such a fulfilling experience to see them taking shape.

Q &A with Slovaz

Who were your musical heroes when you were growing up?
Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson, Roberta Falck, Tupac, Dr DRE just to mention a few.
Creatively they were on point and their music is timeless, as well was always top notch and very relevant. These are qualities that I am constantly trying to improve about myself.

How would you describe your approach to the current album?
With the current album the approach was entirely different, I had to let go of everything I thought I knew. I never thought I could do it. The album is diverse and it encompasses different genres in one project. It was time to do something new and different from my usual township rap tunes, it was time to grow and allow for input from other highly creative people like Gabi Le Roux. it is time to also reveal my singing skills.

What do you think the message of the album is?
I think that each song touches on issues relevant to now. Ubuntu Bami  is music with a message. This is me Slovaz the son, the brother, the husband, the colleague and most of all Slovaz the father who wants to nurture the youth. This is the legacy I want to leave for the youth of South Africa.’

How did the gunshot incident influence your life?
I value my life more; I am not made out of steel. Death is not a far off thing, especially when ones lives a reckless lifestyle.

What's in store for 2012?
The Slovaz Chronicles: Ubuntu Bami.
I think my fans will love and support the album. I believe that through my music i can make a difference in people's lives in 2012
It is my deepest wish to touch people’s hearts with the beauty of my GOD given gift, to share my thoughts and emotions creatively through song, it has always been my wish from ever since I could remember, and there is so much more I want to share.
